On Wednesday, May 18, 2016 the Council of Bishops (COB) made a historic step by putting forth a proposal at General Conference that represents a significant step forward and an institutional shift in the direction of inclusion and equality for people of the LGBTQ community. The proposal was voted on at the General Conference and was accepted with a 428 – 405 vote by conference delegates.
This is the first time in the history of the UMC that the COB has put their collective voice around the cries for change and acceptance of members of the LGBTQ community.
The proposal in its entirety can be Read Here.
Leading up to this historic action on the part of the COB, Conference delegates made their plea for the bishops to take the lead on this critically important matter.
